How Progressive Tax Works
The U.S. uses a progressive tax system — you don't pay your top bracket rate on all income. Each bracket only applies to income within that range. For example, a single filer earning $60,000 pays 10% on the first $12,400, 12% on $12,401–$50,400, and 22% only on $50,401–$60,000.
